Duke Health System Settles

The News & Observer of Raleigh, NC reported this week that the Duke University Health System had settled with an unknown number of patients because the surgical instruments used on them had been cleaned with used hydraulic fluid.

The patients had been treated at either Durham Regional or Duke Raleigh hospitals in late 2004. According to the article more than 3,600 patients had been operated on during that time and with instruments treated with the hydraulic fluid. The fluid had been drained from elavators and had been sent back to be used as a detergent.
